India’s Omicron count goes up to 578, Delhi leads with 142 cases

The number of Omicron cases in India has risen to 578 with Delhi accounting for 142 infections, the highest number among states.</p>
<p>
The national capital is followed by Maharashtra with 141 infections due to the heavily mutated new variant of Covid-19.  Kerala comes next with 57, followed by Gujarat (49) and Rajasthan (43). The total number of discharged Omicron patients stands at 151.</p>
<p>
The Delhi government decided to impose a night curfew from December 27 after 290 Omicron variant cases were reported in the country in one day.</p>
<p>
Most of the cases are related to travel abroad.</p>
<p>
Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh have also registered Omicron cases for the first time on Sunday.</p>
<p>
Meanwhile, India's daily Covid-19 cases on Monday rose by 6,531 and deaths shot up by 315 in a day, according to data compiled by the union health ministry. The daily recoveries stood at 7,141 while the active cases declined to 925. The active cases now stand at 75,841.</p>
<p>
With several states detecting cases of the Omicron variant and a surge in Covid-19 cases, night curfews have also been imposed by the governments of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat have enforced night curfews.</p>
<p>
The national capital had reported 249 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, which was a 38 per cent jump over the previous day and the highest in over six months.</p>
<p>
The city reported one death due Covid during the day, taking the toll to six in December so far.</p>
<p>
The positivity rate for Covid-19 tests rose to 0.55 per cent, according to data shared by the Delhi government's health department on Sunday.</p>
<p>
The total number of active cases now stand at 1,103, of which 583 patients are in home isolation.</p>
