With 7,633 fresh Covid infections being recorded in the last 24 hours, India’s active caseload has gone up to 61233, according to official figures updated by the Union Ministry of Health on Tuesday morning.
The daily count of fresh Covid cases has come down from the over 10,000 single-day infections that were reported for four days in a row last week. The daily positivity rate for the disease now stands at 3.62% while the weekly positive rate is at 5.04%.
However, as many as 24 people died due to Covid on Monday while three earlier deaths were also reconciled by states.
Gujarat recorded the highest number of six deaths, followed by Uttar Pradesh with four. Delhi and Rajasthan reported three deaths each in the last 24 hours.
The remaining deaths were reported from Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Bihar.
Haryana on Monday reported 898 fresh Covid-19 cases and one death, according to a state health department bulletin. More than half of the fresh cases were reported from Gurugram adjoining district, while the death was reported from Panchkula. Gurugram reported 461 Covid cases, Faridabad 134, Yamunanagar 47, Karnal 43, Panchkula 35, Sonipat 23, Rohtak 20 and Panipat 19.
Health department officials said the new Omicron strain is responsible for the fast spread but the severity is low. At present, only about 3 percent of the hospital beds set aside for Covid patients are occupied in Delhi as most people are being treated at home.
