India’s daily count of fresh Covid cases at 5-month low, infections mainly in South, and NE states

Covid-19 cases in India have reported a five-month low

India on Tuesday reported 28,204 fresh COVID-19 infections over the last 24 hours, the lowest since March 16, according to government data.

The number of deaths in the country increased by 373 overnight taking the total death count due to the Covid-19 pandemic since its outbreak in March last year to 428,682.

The number of active Covid-19 cases has fallen to the lowest since March 2020, the Health Ministry said. A decrease of 13,680 cases has been recorded in the caseload in the last span of 24 hours.

Kerala, which saw a sharp rise in Covid cases a few weeks ago, reported 13,049 cases today, the highest number of cases reported by a state on a single day. It also reported 105 deaths.

Tamil Nadu with 1,929 Covid cases, Andhra Pradesh (1,413), Karnataka (1,186) are the other southern states with a high number of cases. Telangana with 453 cases is the only southern state with cases below 1000.

Maharashtra, which leads the states in the total number of Covid cases, reported 4,505 cases today. It also resgistered 68 deaths.

The number of fresh cases reported in each of the four big states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat Madhya Pradesh and Bihar has come down to below 50.

The national capital Delhi reported 39 COVID-19 infections and one fatality, while the number of active cases in the city dropped below 500 for the first time since April last year, according to data.

With 1,120 fresh Covid cases, Assam has recorded the highest number of single-day infections among the north-eastern states. It is followed by Mizoram (937), Manipur (467) and Arunachal Pradesh (302).
