India recorded a 30% jump in the daily count of fresh COVID-19 cases with 17,336 infections in the last 24 hours, the highest since mid-February.

The total number of active cases in the country has now gone up to 88,284, giving rise to fears of a new wave that may strike the country.

The 5 states which reported the highest number of cases today are Maharashtra (5,218), Kerala (3,890), Delhi (1,934), Tamil Nadu (1,063), and Haryana (872).

The cases doubled in Delhi yesterday to touch the highest level since February 4.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya held a high-level meeting yesterday to take stock of the situation and directed officials to continue to focus on surveillance and whole genome sequencing to scan any possible mutations.
