Fight Covid-19 while learning Yoga at home

In the prevailing scenario of stress and anxiety due to the second wave of Covid-19, Yoga can be health promotive and fear relieving. In order to provide this useful support to common people to balance their lives the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) under the Ministry of Ayush is offering quality online Yoga training programme.

Apart from physical and emotional well-being Yoga can provide positivity to overcome the activity crisis arising from staying at home due to the pandemic.

For the beginners, the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) is considered as the best Yoga course, and therefore much of the MDNIY’s current training programmes are devoted to CYP.

The CYP is presently being streamed by MDNIY on their social media platforms. The high quality online instructive videos of CYP help common people to practice Yoga.

The elementary training course is known as the “Yoga Volunteer Training (YVT) Course”. This course, besides imparting Yoga training also provides the learner the opportunity to be endorsed as a “Yoga Volunteer”.

There are four levels of the YVT course, with an overall duration of 36 hours.

At the start of the course, there is a module called the Yoga Appreciation Programme of four days duration with daily practice of 45 minutes. Moving to the second module, the CYP- Introduction Programme, is for 12 days with daily practice of 1.5 hours.

The module, the CYP- Yoga Sadhana will be for six days with daily practice of 1.5 hours while the last module includes a two-day (6 hours daily) CYP- Self Practice, Assessment & Certification.

As a value addition, the MDNIY offers learners an opportunity to obtain a “Volunteer Certificate”, which is an endorsement from the Yoga Certification Board (YCB), the country’s apex body in certification in the field of Yoga.

Though the course is offered free of cost, a nominal processing fee of Rs 250 for the certificate from YCB is charged.

MDNIY offers ample learning material and promotional content to enable individuals and institutions to prepare and participate in the Yoga learning activities.

With the aim of avoiding a gathering of people to learn Yoga, the MDNIY has adopted virtual or digital mode for Yoga training. This has enable it to reach out to thousands of people over the last two months. Also the upcoming International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2021 is an occasion for goal setting in the matter of learning Yoga, as IDY evokes a tremendous spirit of participation.

Moreover, with multitudes fighting against the Coronavirus, Yoga can be a valuable support for the common people in this fight. Therefore, MDNIY has accordingly promoted the message “Be with Yoga, Be at Home” against the backdrop of the pandemic to provide Yoga training to one and all.

The current batch of “Yoga Volunteer Training (YVT) Course” is a part of a joint initiative taken by the Ministry of Ayush (MoA) and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), and commenced on April 21. This would be followed up with repeat batches starting on May 1, May 21, and June 1.
