Daily count of fresh COVID-19 cases in India soar to 3-month high, Mumbai clocks fastest surge

The daily count of fresh COVID-19 cases in India surged to a three-month high of 5,233 on Wednesday, a 41 per cent jump over the previous day, according to data released by the Union Health Ministry.</p>
<p>
The total number of active cases in the country has now gone up to 28,857,</p>
<p>
The surge was led by Maharashtra, which recorded 1,881 new coronavirus cases with Mumbai accounting for as many as 1,242 cases which was nearly twice the number of the previous day.</p>
<p>
Maharashtra has recorded a massive 81 per cent jump in the number of infections and the highest since February 18.</p>
<p>
The state also reported one case of B.A.5 variant, the state health department said.</p>
<p>
India's daily positivity rate was recorded at 1.67 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 1.12 per cent, according to the government.</p>
<p>
Meanwhile the country’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage exceeded 194.43 Cr as per provisional reports till 7 am today.</p>
<p>
COVID-19 vaccination for the age group 12-14 years was started on March 16, 2022. So far, more than 3.46 crore adolescents have been administered with the first dose.</p>
<p>
Similarly, the COVID-19 precaution dose administration for age group 18-59 years also started from April 10, 2022 onwards.</p>
