All-India Institute of Medical Science-Bhubaneswar was in news for conducting successful quadruple joint replacement surgery. The patient was a 37-year-old woman hailing from Kendrapara district’s Aul block in Odisha.
Suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, she was admitted with complaints of painful arthritic knee and hip joints on both sides. She was crippled because of severe arthritic movements and there were no movements in the hip joints while in both the knees there was very little activity.
To evaluate her case, a team of doctors was formed who checked the patient thoroughly and decided to perform surgeries for both the knee joints and hip. As the surgery for replacement of four joints involves several challenges, including surgical stress and bleeding on part of the patient, the doctors assessed the patient’s blood parameter completely before the surgery.
Talking about the procedure, Dr. Sujit Kumar Tripathy, orthopaedic surgeon informed that the team first replaced the hips and then the surgery for the knees was performed. The entire surgery was completed in three hours.
Following this, the patient was moved to ICU and after three days, she started walking. In the past, a quadruple joint replacement surgery was conducted at AIIMS-Delhi on a patient from Odisha.
The cost of the implants and surgery was borne by the Government under the Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana.
