Between Friday and Saturday, India’s addition of new cases came down to less than 4,000 giving a ray of hope

Is the Covid 19 daily new infection graph beginning to flatten in India? On Saturday India reported 3.49 lakh fresh cases. While this is an increase over Friday’s figure of 3.46 lakh cases, the rate of progression has eased. For the last one month, India has been reporting an average increase of 15,000 a day barring Mondays. Typically, the number of fresh cases on Monday has been lower—as number of tests on Sundays are lower. But according to latest data the addition of fresh cases between Friday and Saturday was less than 4,000, though the total number reported yesterday was the highest in the country.</p>

On April 19, India added 2.59 lakh fresh cases while the next day, the number was 2.95 lakh. On April 21, a total of 3.14 lakh new cases were added. Again on April 22 and 23, the daily increase stood at 3.32 lakh and 3.46 lakh respectively.</p>

"We need to wait and watch before drawing any conclusion but yet, going by this, we feel it is beginning to plateau," a senior Gurgaon-based physician said.</p>

The average increase of over 10,000 in the last one week seemed to slow down. States such as Maharashtra, Kerala, Delhi among others have shown that the daily numbers of news Coronavirus cases are stabilising.</p>

Experts said that while the local restrictions including mini lockdowns and night curfews have helped in somewhat controlling the situation, the vaccination drive is also having an impact.</p>

Reports have suggested that India’s second wave is expected to peak by mid-May.</p>

Meanwhile, industry body Assocham said that the “war footing national efforts underway by scaling up vaccination through domestic production and duty- free imports and airlifting of oxygen by Indian Air Force and special oxygen trains would strengthen India's fight against coronavirus.”</p>

Assocham secretary general Deepak Sood said that said lowering of vaccination age to 18 years will boost the vaccination drive. “With approval of several vaccine candidates to manufacture and/or import vaccines, the logistics and medical infrastructure is being readied for increased demand for inoculation,” he said.</p>
