World’s busiest trains back on Mumbai tracks as Covid on way out

Mumbai's local trains, considered the busiest in the world, have started running again after 10 months as Covid cases have come down in India's commercial capital.

The suburban trains, which carry nearly eight million people every day, were shut down to contain the spread of the dreaded coronavirus.

However, some Covid restrictions are in place as masks and temperature checks are mandatory for commuters.

Meanwhile metro trains have already been running in Delhi. The number of new Covid patients recorded during a day in the national capital remains low with only 121 fresh cases being reported on Monday. Only 32 of them needed hospitalisation which is the lowest number in the last 10 months. The number of daily deaths due to Covid came down to three, which is a 9-month low.

The daily deaths attributed to Covid nationwide fell to 96 on Monday which is the lowest level since May 14 last year, health ministry figures showed. The number of fresh coronavirus cases in India also continued to decline and was put at 8,600, the lowest level since June 2.
