Over 4 crore unorganised sector workers could benefit after registering on govt’s e-Shram portal

More than four crore workers, of whom around 50 per cent beneficiaries are female, have registered on the e-Shram portal that was launched less than two months ago. Minister for Labour and Employment, Bhupender Yadav said that by registering on the portal, the unorganized workers will be able to get the benefits of government schemes easily.

First of its kind, e-Shram portal is a national online database of unorganised workers that was launched by the Narendra Modi government on August 26 with an aim to register 38 crore workers engaged in the unorganised sector. Registration of workers on the portal makes it easier for them to avail the government’s welfare schemes.

An official statement said that workers in diverse occupations such as construction, apparel manufacturing, fishing, gig and platform work, street vending, domestic work, agriculture and transport sectors have registered at the portal.

In some of these sectors an overwhelming proportion of migrant workers are also engaged, it said, adding that all of them can now take the benefits of various social security and employment-based schemes through registration at the e-Shram portal.

According to data, Odisha, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh are at the forefront of this initiative with the highest number of registrations.

About 65.68 per cent of these registered workers are between the age of 16 and 40 years. The statement said that the social compositions of these workers include Other Backward Castes (OBC) and General Castes with almost 43 per cent and 27 per cent respectively from these categories and 23 per cent and 7 per cent being from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
