More than 6 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed for the assessment year 2022-23 so far, of which 26.76 lakh were filed on July 30 till 6.30 pm, according to statistics compiled by the Income Tax Department.
The department also said more than 1.3 crore successful logins were made on the e-filing portal till 6.30 pm on Sunday.
“To assist taxpayers for ITR filing, tax payment and other related services, our helpdesk is functioning ona 24×7 basis, and we are providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions & social media,” the department said.
The last date for filing income tax returns by the salaried class and those who do not have to get their accounts audited is July 31.
Those who miss the date can file their returns by December 31, but will have to pay a penalty of up to Rs 5,000.
Since a large number of taxpayers have verified their returns digitally, this has helped the Income Tax Department to expeditiously process the returns and issue refunds.
