India's Khadi craze rises
The demand for khadi is continuing to increase. The Khadi India Showroom at Connaught Place in the heart of New Delhi recorded the highest single day sales of Rs 1.34 crore on October 2 this year. Last year on the same day the outlet sold goods worth Rs 1.01 crore. Earlier, the highest single day sale of Khadi stood at Rs 1.29 crore that was recorded on October 30 2021, an official statement said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who personally prefers wearing clothes made of khadi, has taken a strong interest in reviving the popularity of this fabric, which symbolises India’s ethos of self reliance. Earlier, he had also urged citizens to purchase khadi products at least on October 2—the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
He also said that purchase of khadi would mean helping the country’s weavers.
The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), which falls under the ministry of micro, small & medium enterprises has also come up with several new products under the Khadi brand to promote the brand and even make it popular among the younger generation.
“Like swaraj (self-rule), khadi is our birth-right, and it is our life-long duty to use that only. Anyone who does not fulfil that duty is totally ignorant of what swaraj is,” Gandhi had written almost 96 years ago, according to the Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sangrahalaya in Mumbai.
“We cannot claim to have understood the meaning of swaraj till khadi becomes as universal as currency,” Gandhi had said.
