India’s South Central Railway commissions giant rail flyover, will link two key railway stations on busy route

Making efforts to provide efficient service, the South Central Railway has been continuously upgrading its infrastructure, including those which ease the movement of trains over its rail network. This enables the zone to handle more trains.

As part of this endeavour, a new rail flyover — rail over rail — has been commissioned between Gudur-Manubolu railway stations in SCR’s Vijayawada Division.  Constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, it is part of the third line works between Gudur-Manubolu.

This is the seventh RoR in SCR and stretches a distance of 2.2 kilometres making it the longest one in the zone. The earlier RoR was 40 meters.

This single line rail flyover can handle traffic in both directions and is capable of handling trains with 32.5 tonnes of axle load.

This stretch of 2.2 km of electrified railway flyover was completed within two years with state-of-the-art technology. It has made using pre-stressed concrete and composite girders which have inherent high torsional resistance and lower maintenance costs. The bridge was planned in a way that it could be built within the available railway land, thereby avoiding any acquisition.

Gudur railway station which is on the busy Grand Trunk Route, is an important interchange point between SCR and Southern Railway handling movement of all types of trains. With its commissioning simultaneous movements of trains between Vijayawada to Renigunta and Chennai to Vijayawada, while passing through Gudur station will be possible. Earlier, one of the trains had to be stopped to facilitate movement of the other. The flyover will improve average speed of the trains; reduce their waiting time, and enhance operational efficiency of their movement in the section.

Arun Kumar Jain, General Manager, SCR while complimenting officers and staff of SCR and RVNL for constructing this RoR said it was very much needed at Gudur station where the number of passing trains was increasing continuously.
