India’s coal production surges 12% in April-September amid record high global consumption

India’s overall coal production in September stood at 67.21million tonne (MT) compared to 58.04 MT in the corresponding month in the previous year– an increase of 15.81 per cent. Coal India Limited’s production (CIL) rose to 51.44 MT in September against 45.67 MT in the same month in the previous year—a growth of 12.63 per cent. The cumulative coal production up to September has seen 428.25 MT in the current financial year compared to 382.16 MT during the same period in FY’ 22-23. This is an increase of more than 12.06 per cent.

Earlier, a government said that demand for coal will continue in the country with a likely peak between 2030-2035.

Meanwhile, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said that the global coal consumption climbed to a new all-time high in 2022.

China, India and Southeast Asian countries together are expected to account for 3 out of every 4 tonnes of coal consumed worldwide in 2023, the IEA said. It also noted that the three largest coal producers – China, India and Indonesia – all produced record amounts in 2022.

The Centre assured maintaining consistent coal production and dispatch for uninterrupted supply of this energy source which in turn is key for economic growth.

Coal accounts for 55 per cent of the country’s overall energy needs.
