Gold worth Rs 2 crore hidden under silver coating seized at Delhi airport, 3 arrested

Customs Department officials at Delhi airport arrested three Kuwait nationals and recovered 4001 gms of gold worth Rs 2.06 crore that they were trying to smuggle into the country.

The three air passengers had coated the gold with silver and were trying to pass it off as silver jewellery.

“On the basis of spot profiling, Customs at IGIA (Indira Gandhi International Airport) have seized silver coated gold jewellery weighing 4001 grams valued at 2.06 crore brought by 3 Kuwait nationals,” the Customs Department post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

All three have been arrested under Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation into the matter is underway to unravel the wider smuggling network and ascertain its links in India.

Gold smuggling has been on the rise as prices of the precious metal are much higher in India than abroad. Gold can be easily bought in the Gulf countries and unscrupulous elements resort to smuggling in order to make a fast buck.

Earlier on August 13 the Air Customs at IGIA airport had booked five people in three separate cases of smuggling and recovered 6522 gms of gold worth Rs 3.43 crore concealed in their clothes and rectum.
