Electric vehicle sales surge, UP, Maharashtra, Karnataka emerge as top 3 states

Electric vehicle (EV) sales have surged in India with 8.5 lakh new EVs being registered across the country in the past seven-and-a-half months this year, according to government data.

Registration of electric vehicles in the country jumped more than 3-fold with 10.2 lakh EVs being registered in 2022 compared to 3.3 lakh in 2021, according to official figures tabled in Parliament.

Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of EVs at 5.7 lakh, followed by Maharashtra with 3 lakh, Karnataka (2.4 lakh) and Delhi (2.3 lakh). Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Bihar and Assam have over 1 lakh each.

Incentives being offered under the government’s Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) Scheme have played an important role in pushing the sales of these green vehicles.

Phase-II of the scheme launched by the Ministry of Heavy Industries for a period of five years commencing from 1st April, 2019 with a total budgetary support of Rs. 10,000 crore which aims to reduce pollution and reduce the carbon footprint of the country in the fight against climate change.

The scheme mainly focuses on supporting electrification of public and shared transportation, and aims to support through demand incentive 7090 eBuses, 5 lakh e-3 Wheelers, 55000 e-4 Wheeler Passenger Cars and 10 lakh e-2 Wheelers. In addition, creation of charging infrastructure is also supported under the Scheme.

Leading electric car manufacturers such as Tata Motors are optimistic about Auto industry’s four-wheeler electric vehicle (EV) sales.

Shailesh Chandra, managing director of passenger vehicle (PV) and EV division of Tata Motors said, electric car sales could rise by 10 times in India to cross the 1 million unit-mark in the next five years due to strong demand, continued government support, deeper penetration of charging infrastructure, and launch of wide range of products by multiple automobile makers.
