Airlines slash fares as lean rainy season sets in

Airfares which had soared in May and early June this year have been drastically slashed as airlines compete for passengers with the lean monsoon season setting in.

A one-way air ticket on the Mumbai-Delhi route which started at around Rs 19,000 for travel on the next day in the first week of June has now come down to around Rs 5,000. Similarly, fares to holiday destinations like Srinagar and Leh have also come down.

Tata Group full-service airline Vistara has been first off the blocks with its Monsoon Sale 2023, offering flights on its domestic and international routes at starting fares of Rs 1,499 and Rs 11,799 respectively.

For domestic, one-way fares start at Rs 1,499 for Economy Class, Rs 1,999 for Premium Economy, and Rs 9,999 for Business Class. For international, return all-inclusive fares start at Rs11,799 for Economy Class (Delhi-Kathmandu), INR 13599 for Premium Economy (Delhi-Kathmandu), and Rs 38,999 for Business Class (Delhi-Kathmandu).

Bookings are open until 23:59 hours on 04-July-2023, for travel between 01-July-2023 and 23-March-2024 – both dates included (blackout dates apply).

Airlines offer cheap fares for a limited period to sell seats which they think would otherwise go empty. The sale helps them to get ready cash from customers in advance for their day-to-day operations which reduces the amount they have to borrow from banks at high rates of interest.
