World’s highest post office in Himachal gets a makeover

It is not a place you would exactly expect a post office to be but it is there. Located in Hikkim, Himachal Pradesh’s Spiti Valley, this post office now sports a new look and bears an attractive letter-box-shape and simply looks amazing!

Situated at 14,567 feet above sea level, this PO has been operating since 1983 from an old building. Even then international and national tourists flocked to see it.

Considering its popularity, the Department of Posts decided to construct a new office and it was given a unique shape of a letter-box. It was inaugurated by Vandita Kaul, Chief Postmaster General, Himachal Circle while the guest of honour was Abhishek Verma, Assistant Deputy Commissioner.

The new office seems to be attracting many more people and all of them are clicking pictures and also sending letters and colourful postcards from there to celebrate their visit. Many selfie points too have come up outside the premises.

Talking about the PO, Kaul said: “There is no post office in the country like the one here. It is the centre of attraction in itself. Tourists from around the world send letters to their near and dear ones from the Hikkim Post Office. It will also prove to be very important from the point of view of tourism.”

Verma pointed out that the Hikkim PO was one of the favourite places of tourists in Spiti. “Now tourists will also like the post office running in the shape of this letter box.”
