He counter attacked England’s pace offensive to gain the psychological advantage, hitting ace pacer Jack Leach for two fours and a six off three consecutive balls.
Pant smashed his way to a score of 146 off a mere 111 balls embellished with 20 fours and 4 sixes. His partnership with Ravindra Jadeja put on 222 runs for the sixth wicket and steadied the Indian innings.
Pant had hit his half-century off just 51 deliveries at the Tea break.
The counter- offensive came as a welcome relief immediately after India lost key batsman Hanuma Vihari and Virat Kohli in quick succession.
