A video posted by retired IAS officer Surya Pratap Singh shows people rushing to rescue the couple as soon as they surface above the water although their scooter is still submerged and out of sight.

The policeman and his wife were on their way to hospital in the city.

"We were going to a hospital on the scooter. Since the drain was inundated due to rainwater, we couldn’t see it and fell into it along with the scooter. We both sustained some injuries," policeman Dayanand Singh told journalists.

According to local media reports the sewer lines were open and choked.
