Watch: Carlos Alcaraz’s tears of joy as he defeats Djokovic for Wimbledon crown

Carlos Alcaraz defeated seven-time champion Novak Djokovic to claim his first Wimbledon title on Sunday in what is seen as the dawn of a generation shift in world tennis.  Alcaraz was less than 5 years old when Djokovic won his first grand slam in 2008.

The 20-year-old Alcaraz shattered the Serb’s dream of a 24th Grand Slam that would have made him equal Margaret Court’s all-time record. Djokovic was also stopped short of Roger Federer’s record of 8 Wimbledon titles.

Alcaraz recovered after dropping the first set and saving a set point in the second to win in a marathon five-setter 1-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 that took four hours and 42 minutes on Centre Court and was reminiscent of the famous Federer-Djokovic clash at the same venue.

It was the second Grand Slam title for the Spanish player, who idolises Nadal, following his US Open win last year.
