The JNU Man who does Magic with a typewriter!

There is much more to Vinod Kumar Chaudhary, a self-effacing computer operator at Capital’s Jawaharlal Nehru University’s School of Environmental Sciences. A talented person, he holds nine Guinness World Records for typing skill.

Forty one-year-old Chaudhary utilised his time at home during the lockdown last year when he set his latest record.

The walls of the computer centre are adorned with records — from one for fastest typing with his nose in 2014 to another for typing fastest blindfolded to fastest typing with a mouth stick. Interestingly, this centre, Chaudhary runs for poor and disabled children.

Discussing his love for typing, Chaudhary told news agency PTI: "I was always fascinated by speed. As a child I was very enthusiastic about sports but as I grew up I could not pursue sports due to some health issues. I, then, developed a similar passion for speed on the computer. I made my first record in 2014 when I typed 103 characters in 46.30 seconds with my nose. This is the shortest time taken so far to do this kind of typing.”

Instead of resting on his laurels, Chaudhary was inspired to do better. "Once, I got my certificate for the record, it gave me a different kind of motivation and I started practising for more such records. I spent the next one year practising and in 2016 I made two records,” he informed the agency.

The second record of Chaudhary was for fastest typing of all alphabets blindfolded in 6.71 seconds in 2016. This was followed by a record for fastest typing in 6.09 seconds.

In 2017, he achieved another remarkable feat. Holder of a MA degree in Sociology, Chaudhary, made a record of typing all alphabets within 18.65 seconds holding a stick in his mouth. A man with determination to be better, he to the surprise of many went on to break his own record in 2018 by achieving the same feat in 17.69 seconds and then in 2019 in 17.01 seconds.

Besides, bettering his own record in 2019, the same year, Chaudhary got himself again in the Guinness book. This time it was for fastest typing with one finger where he punched all alphabets in 29.53 seconds.

“My aim is to make over 19 entries in the Guinness book, a record held by veteran cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. I keep looking for new ideas and practising for them," he explained his continued effort to make new and better old records.

For his latest achievement, Chaudhary moved away from typewriter as he wanted to do something new.

"My last record is for maximum touching of the hand by a tennis ball within one minute. I could do it 205 times. This is the first such record in the Guinness book. When I proposed, they gave me a target of 180," he revealed.

There is a humane aspect to Chaudhary too as he wants to run a computer institute for the needy which does not lack in any infrastructure and imparts free training.

Sharing his vision he said: "Right now I run it at home. I have few computers where students can practice but I have my own limitations financially. I plan to expand the centre someday.”JNU
