The plight of an injured animal sometimes moves people to rescue it and that is what happened in Wanaparthy in Telangana. Dharmayya, a resident of this town, found a cobra while the foundation stone of his house was being laid on the weekend.

Instead of getting panicky, Dharmayya looked at the reptile closely and found it to be injured and unable to move. Without wasting any time, he contacted Cheerla Krishna Sagar.

Sagar works as a Home Guard but he is very well-known in the Wanaparthy district for rescuing snakes. He carefully picked up the snake and took it to the local veterinary clinic. After examining the creature, the doctor suggested an X-ray.

Examining the X-ray, Dr. Pagidala Srinivas Reddy put a plaster cast on the cobra.

Sagar said once the healing of the cobra was complete, it will be released back into its natural habitat.

Sagar the snake rescuer

The 42-year-old Sagar who works as a constable, founded the Sagar Snake Society in 2012 for rescuing and preserving the snakes. Ironically, Sagar in the past was not like this and in fact working on his father’s field, he used to kill these reptiles. “Like most others, I used to kill snakes in my father’s farm, fearing them and assuming that every snake is venomous.”

Once he was bitten by a snake and in anger and fear, killed it. During his treatment he became aware of the fact that it was a non-poisonous snake and he felt sad about killing it. Realising that not all these serpents are a danger to human beings, he decided to become their saviour. He read books on them and watched videos and later started the Society which not only saves them but also makes people, including children aware about them.

The society has more than 35 members.
