These gadgets will allow the passengers to get real-time information regarding vacant berths at the stations on the route. With cancellation details being sent to HHTs on hourly basis, fraudulent travel can be checked and curbed.

According to the Press release issued by SR: “The TTEs can easily check the tickets of passengers, mark turned up/not turned up and expedite allotment of fresh/alternate berths or seats. Besides, upgrading/downgrading accommodation, calculation of occupancy for food and bedrolls can be made swiftly.”

Initially the HHTs were launched in December 2018 as a pilot project to help in simplifying on-board ticket checking. They were used on an experimental basis on two train services in the first phase.

Till now these terminals have been used in trains including the Madurai-Chennai Egmore Tejas Express, Chennai Egmore – Tiruchirapalli Rockfort Express and the Chennai Egmore – Salem Superfast Express. Soon they will be introduced in more trains in a phased manner.

Of 857 HHTs at present, 246 have been distributed in the Chennai Railway Division. The remaining have been distributed in the Tiruchchirappalli division (101), Madurai division (98), Thiruvananthapuram division (148), Palakkad division (140) and Salem division (124).
