Dandagi was operated upon at the KLES Hospital in Belagavi where he underwent craniotomy or the removal surgically of part of the bone from the skull to expose the brain for surgery. While the doctors tried their level best, they were unable to save him and on March 16 he was declared brain dead.

The officials of the Jeevasarthakathe, the Government body which oversees cadaver organ donation in Karnataka — initiated the procedure and process of organ donation. They took a written consent from the members of Dandagi’s family.

Following this the organs were harvested and its recipients were decided according to the waiting list.

For transplanting the liver, it was airlifted within hours from Belagavi Airport to Bengaluru. Ensuring that no time was lost in transportation, the Bengaluru Traffic Police created a green corridor from Kempegowda International Airport to Sparsh Hospital, RR Nagar, where the liver transplantation was successfully done to a patient.

The request for the green corridor was made by the Sparsh Hospital for smooth passage of the liver, informed the Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Bengaluru City, BR Ravikanthe Gowda.
