Revamp of Changampuzha Park, Kochi’s prominent art and cultural space, to start from Aug 26

Kerala’s prominent art and cultural space located in Kochi, Changampuzha Park is all set to undergo significant changes. In collaboration with Cochin Smart Mission Limited, the Greater Cochin Development Authority, is preparing a comprehensive renovation plan for the park.

The makeover of this vibrant hub of cultural activities in the State is expected to cost around Rs.4 crore and according to the GCDA officials it is expected to be completed within six months. The authorities will ensure that during the restoration process, the park will not be closed completely and events and cultural activities will continue without any interruption.

The proposed work at the popular park envisages raising its elevation to road level, auditorium refurbishing to accommodate more people, building an art gallery and a small amphitheatre, making the drainage system more effective, expanding restroom and toilet facilities, upgrading footpaths and the surrounding area, augmenting street lighting, and much more.

The new design and outlay of Changampuzha Park has been conceived with inputs from the Indian Institute of Architects, Kochi Centre. The whole plan was finalised through participatory public space intervention proposal approach which involved discussions with experts and stakeholders closely connected with this cultural space.

Constructed by GCDA in 1977 to honour the late poet Changampuzha Krishna Pillai, the park at present is maintained by the Changampuzha Cultural Centre while the ownership rests with the authority.

The renovation work which is scheduled to start from Saturday will be launched by K. Balachandran, former GCDA chairman.
