Rescue of 3 Kangaroos in West Bengal surprises forest officials

<p>
<strong>In a surprising case, thousands of kilometres away from their natural habitat in Australia and New Guinea, a baby kangaroo was found dead in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district. Besides this baby, another three kangaroos were rescued from the same place last week, said the forest officials.</strong></p>

The joey or the baby kangaroo was found dead in a Nepali baste which is situated near Farabari in the Siliguri town located in the northern part of the State. The other animals were rescued from the localities of Gajaldoba and Dabgram-Farabari following a tip-off, the officials informed.</p>

The officials also added that in both the cases, those suspected of the crime had fled from the spot. The Ranger of Baikunthapur Forest Division, Sanjay Dutta said the department had already started investigating the matter.</p>

Talking to the media, a senior forest official said: “After being rescued, all three kangaroos were sent for treatment. We are surprised as to who brought these kangaroos here and how. We suspect these kangaroos were being smuggled to Nepal. But we are looking into the motive behind smuggling as well.”</p>

The creatures have been sent to the Bengal Safari Park for medical treatment and rehabilitation.</p>
<p>
It is thought that these animals had been smuggled from Thailand as their delicate meat is in great demand.</p>
