India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty scripted history on Sunday as they defeated world badminton champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia to win the country’s first ever gold medal in men’s doubles at the Indonesia Open.
Rankireddy and Shetty downed the reigning world champions with a score of 21-17, 21-18, to become the first Indians ever to win a Super 1000 title.
The victory came just a month after the duo won the gold medal at the Badminton Asia Championships prior to which they had won gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and the Thomas Cup.
On Saturday, Rankireddy and Shetty had won a tough semifinals match against Min Hyuk Kang and Seung Jae Seo of Korea to storm into the finals of the Indonesia Open 2023.
The Indian pair were ranked seventh in the tournament.
