There has been a spurt in the non-fare revenue of Central Railway and this has been primarily due to innovative facilities that have been provided to the passengers.
These modern amenities which make travelling an easy and pleasant experience include Digital Smart Cloak Rooms — Digilockers, Personal Care Centres, e-bikes and e-charging points among others.
The Digilockers has been one of the most successful initiatives and the Mumbai Division has implemented the concept at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Mumbai, Dadar and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus stations. CR has a total of 560 digilockers — 300 at CSMT, 160 at Dadar and 100 at LTT.
This self-operated facility is passenger friendly, easy to use and transparent in operation. After touching the start button, name, PNR and mobile number have to be entered. On selecting the locker size and number of bags, a payment of Rs.30 per bag has to be made enabling the passenger to keep the luggage. To retrieve the bags the receipt barcode has to be scanned which allows access.
That this facility has gained popularity is evident from the fact that an average of 235 passengers per day make use of digilockers and from April 2021 to March 2022 it has earned Rs.31.6 lakhs.
