Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the demise of Brazilian football legend, Pele on Friday, saying that his passing away leaves an irreplaceable void in the world of sports.
“The passing away of Pele leaves an irreplaceable void in the world of sports. A global football superstar, his popularity transcends boundaries,” tweeted PM Modi who himself suffered a massive personal loss today with the demise of his mother in Ahmedabad.
“His outstanding sporting performances and success will keep inspiring the coming generations. Condolences to his family and fans. RIP,” added PM Modi in his tribute to the greatest idol of world football.
82-year-old Edson Arantes do Nascimento, famously known as Pele, passed away at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo earlier Friday.
He was diagnosed in 2021 with colon cancer and had his death confirmed due to the problem, with multiple organ failure.
US President Joe Biden said that Pele’s rise from humble beginnings to soccer legend is a story of what is possible.
Former US President Barack Obama tweeted his photograph with Pele and said that he was one of the greatest to ever play the beautiful game.
French President Emmanuel Macron also took to Twitter after footballer’s death, tweeting “Le Jeu, Le Roi, L’éternité” – The game, the king, eternity.
