A hapless Nilgai which was attacked by feral dogs and injured was rescued by the Wildlife SOS in West Delhi’s Bakkarwala.

The NGO’s Rapid Response Unit received a call on their 24-hour rescue helpline on Friday evening, informing about a nilgai calf which was in need of medical aid. The helpless antelope was injured by a pack of feral dogs near Durga Mata Mandir in Bakkarwala.

A concerned citizen had moved the animal to the temple for safety till the rescue team arrived.

The rescue unit on arriving at the spot could find no sign of the mother and therefore moved the baby nilgai to the NGO’s transit facility for treatment.

Sharing details about the calf, Wasim Akram, Deputy Director, Special Projects for Wildlife SOS, said: “The nilgai has sustained superficial injuries in the back region. The animal is under immense stress and is currently receiving medical treatment.”

Endemic to India, the Nilgai or Blue Bull is the largest Asian antelope faces threats like hunting, human-wildlife conflict, deforestation and habitat degradation. They are considered as pests by farmers in several north Indian States.
