Male leopard brings Mercedes Benz factory in Pune to a grinding halt!

The male leopard who entered the Mercedes Benz factory on Monday morning was rescued following a four-hour operation

Known for making world class cars, the Mercedes Benz India production facility spread across 100 acres in Chakan near Pune was in for a shock on Monday morning, as it had an unusual visitor, a VIP in its own right – a leopard.

Seized with twin concerns — of the safety of their staff as well as the wellbeing of the big cat– the security staff immediately contacted the Forest Department.

The concerned authorities informed the Wildlife SOS team based at the Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre. A four-member team from the Wildlife SOS Rapid Response unit proceeded to the spot immediately and it was headed by Wildlife SOS Veterinary Officers, Dr. Nikhil Bangar and Dr. Shubham Patil.

Locating the animal was the first step by the response team, following which it was secured. Adhering to all the necessary and required protocols, Dr. Bangar tranquilized the leopard from a safe distance.

The entire rescue operation lasted for four hours.

The tranquilised animal was moved to a transportation cage and handed over to the Chakan Forest Department for further care.

Talking about the animal under their care, Yogesh Mahajan, Range Forest Officer from Chakan Forest Department said: “The leopard is currently under medical observation and will be released back into its natural habitat.”

Sharing details about the leopard, Dr. Bangar said: “The leopard was a male, approximately 2-3 years of age. We are grateful for the Forest Department that acted promptly and helped save the life of this leopard.”
