Work is going at a brisk pace to complete redevelopment of Southern Railway’s Kanniyakumari station. The proposed station will have not just world-class ambience but also futuristic infrastructure and facilities which are available for passengers in airports.
The work for the new Kanniyakumari station to be built at a cost of Rs.49.36 crore Redevelopment works has been given to M/s Engineering Projects (India) Ltd, Chennai while M/s. TUV India Pvt Ltd, Mumbai will provide the project management services at a cost of Rs.2.72 crore.
The proposed project involves the construction of two state-of-the-art terminal buildings. While one will be located on the southern side, the other will be on the northern side and the two will be connected by ground concourses. The two G+1 structures will offer a range of world-class amenities, including air-conditioned waiting lounges, ticketing areas, commercial spaces, food courts, and more.
The concourses are designed in such a way that it will facilitate segregating arriving and departing passengers, with foot over bridges, lifts, and escalators for seamless passenger movement besides featuring retail spaces.
To make arrival and departure of passengers easy and comfortable a covered driveway and forecourt on the eastern side will enable passenger drop-off and pick-up facilities, while the entry and exit roads will prioritize efficient traffic flow. The station will be equipped with lighting, CCTV, public address systems, and signages to make the travel experience of people enjoyable.
For the smooth operation, there will be structures for housing the support facilities and staff like the Railway Protection Force, the mechanical staff, restrooms for running staff and loco pilots, and a substation building.
The new Kanniyakumari station promises enhanced passenger experience and streamlining of railway operations with improved infrastructure and modern amenities.
