Actor Jacqueline Fernandez has written a heartfelt post over the dire situation in her home country Sri Lanka, where people have been camping on streets due to food and fuel shortage.

"As a Srilankan, it is heartbreaking to see what my country and countrymen are going through", Fernandez posted on her Instagram profile.

People in the island nation have been suffering high inflation, long queues as well as food shortages. People have been protesting against their government, asking President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to quit. They have now occupied the iconic Galle Face sea front, which also leads to the top administrative offices.

Sharing her views about the situation in Sri Lanka, she said: "I have been flooded with a lot of opinions since this began from around the world. I would say, do not be too quick to pass a judgement and vilify any group based on what is shown. The world and my people do not need another judgement, they need empathy and support. 2-minutes of silent prayer for their strength and well-being will bring you much closer to them than a comment based on a loose grasp of the situation".

Fernandez added: "To my country and countrymen, I am hoping this situation comes to an end soon and through means which are peaceful and for the benefit of the people. Praying for immense strength to those dealing with this. Peace to all!"

Experts say that the country is witnessing its worst crisis ever since independence from Britain due to burgeoning external debt, poor governance, the Sunday Easter bomb blasts and the Covid-19 crisis.
