India win gold & silver in men’s triple jump for first time ever as Eldhose Paul and Abdulla shine

Eldhose Paul Bags Gold And Abdulla Aboobacker Takes Silver in The Men's Triple Jump

It was a double-delight for India with Eldhose Paul bringing home a gold in the men’s triple jump and compatriot Abdulla Aboobacker finishing a close second in the event.

This is India's first gold medal in athletics in CWG 2022 so far.

Paul’s best effort of 17.03 metres came in his third jimp while Abdulla finished with 17.02 metres to bring home in the silver.

Paul moved into the lead with his third jump, the only time that he surpasses the 17m mark in his six attempts.

Aboobacker kept improving steadily throughout the competition and eventually moved into the silver medal position with his 5th attempt.

India has won four triple jump medals in the past editions but this is the first time two athletes from the country have got podium finishes.

Menwhile, boxers Amit Panghal and Nitu Ganghas bagged gold medals for India in the men's flyweight and women's minimumweight categories, respectively.

The good news came on a day when Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu sailed through her semi-final in straight games to reach the women's singles badminton final.

Pugilists Amit Panghal, Nikhat Zareen and Sagar Ahlawat will also be going all out for gold when they step out to participate in their respective final bouts.

India also won the bronze medal in women's hockey after beating New Zealand in a penalty shootout on Sunday. Earlier, New Zealand had equalised the score with a mere 17 seconds to go for the final whistle which took match into a penalty shootout.

India will also take on Australia for gold in the women's cricket final.

India has won 40 medals so far in the ongoing Commonwealth Games which entered the 10th day.
