India break 22-year-old Sri Lanka record in Test cricket

India broke the record for the fastest ever 100 being scored in a Test match on the fourth day of the match versus the West Indies at Port of Spain on Sunday.

Team skipper Rohit Sharma came up with a scintillating knock of 57 off 44 balls embellished with three sixes. He was backed all the way by hard hitting youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal who plundered 38 runs off 30 balls. The two openers took the score to 98 runs in 11.5 overs in India’s second innings. After this the team reached the 100 mark in 74 balls (12.2 overs) to break Sri Lanka’s 22-year-old record.

Sri Lanka had scored 100 in 13.2 overs (80 balls) in a Test match versus Bangladesh in 2001 played on the Emerald Island.

Rohit also notched up his fifty in just 35 balls. Rohit’s previous quickest Test fifty had arrived in 47 balls against England at Chepauk.

Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal also recorded India’s fastest-ever 50-run opening partnership in Tests. The India openers have now accumulated 466 runs as a batting duo on the West Indies tour.

Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan smashed his first Test half-century off 34 balls as India declared on 181-2 in 24 over

Rohit Sharma also became the first batter in the history of Test cricket to register 30 consecutive double-digit figures. The record was earlier held Sri Lanka great Mahela Jayawardene who had 29 double-digit scores to his credit.

India declared their second innings at 181 for 2 during the final session on day four, setting the West Indies a tough target of 365 to win the second Test on Sunday.

Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan remained not out on 29 and 52 respectively when the declaration was made on a day when rain played spoilsport. Only three overs were possible in the afternoon session due to rain.
