How Monty the dog found solace before he passed away

One has heard several stories of dogs going to any length to please and help their masters but here is a tale which shows human beings too are capable of reciprocating the love of these furry canines!

The story will definitely touch the heart of all dog lovers but it will even move those who have an empathic heart.

An article in India Today reports about a Welshman Carlos Fresco taking Monty, his pet dog for a trip. Well nothing unusual about it. Wait, there is as it was Monty’s last trip as the 10-year-old labradoodle passed away after months of battling leukaemia.

Taking the social media by storm are the images of Fresco and Monty as they went up their last hike together. The pictures were posted by The Brecon and Radnor Express on Facebook.

Suffering from leukaemia, Monty could not walk and 57-year-old Fresco knew his time with Monty was about to get over. He wanted Monty’s remaining last days to be like his other best days.

Among the things both Fresco and Monty loved to do was going for a hike to Pen y Fan, which is the highest peak in Wales, located in Brecon Beacons National Park. Fresco decided to carry him to his favourite mountain in Brecon, Wales, in a wheelbarrow. Fresco not only decided but did it too. The place was special for Monty as both he and Fresco had gone up the same spot many times over the years in the past.

Fresco told South West News Service: "I knew Monty was dying as his cancer had returned. He was diagnosed 18 months ago and responded very well to chemotherapy.”

When others who too were hiking at the spot, saw Fresco and Monty in the wheelbarrow, many asked if they could push the wheelbarrow to allow them to spend some time with Monty.

Monty also responded to all the love and affection being showered on him. "Although he was weak, he enjoyed all the fuss and attention received by so many well-wishers. People on the hills were so kind and equally so sad at his deteriorating condition,” averred Fresco.

Even though Monty responded well on receiving the chemotherapy treatments, he finally could not beat the disease. Shortly after this hike, he passed away on June 21, at the foot of Fresco’s bed.

“That little guy touched so many lives. He made everyone he came into contact with smile and take a moment to reflect how sometimes life’s not that bad. Our little companions are never judgemental, are always there waiting for you, and offer comfort when things haven’t gone well,” Fresco observed.

The reaction of people on seeing the pictures on social media was very emotional as evident from their comments. While one wrote, “Precious memory making leaky eyes here,” another added, “God bless you and Monty. What a beautiful thing to do for him.”
