Hotel room charges in Ahmedabad have jumped up to 10 times for October 15 after the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the schedule for the ODI World Cup, and the date of the India versus Pakistan match to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in the city, news agency PTI has reported.
Some hotels have raised room rents for a night’s stay to ₹ 1 lakh and many hotels are already fully booked for the day of the match.
On normal days, room rent in luxury hotels range between ₹ 5,000 and ₹ 8,000 in Ahmedabad. These have now shot up to between ₹ 40,000, and ₹ 1 lakh in some hotels for October 15.
Hotel booking portal ‘booking.com‘ shows the rent for a deluxe room for July 2 is ₹ 5,699 at ITC’s Welcome Hotel in the city. However, the hotel has jacked up its tariff to ₹ 71,999 for a day on October 15.
Similarly, Renaissance Ahmedabad Hotel which currently charges around ₹ 8,000 for a day, has raised its room rent to ₹ 90,679 for October 15.
Pride Plaza Hotel has also hiked its charges to ₹ 36,180 for that day and The Cama Hotel on Sabarmati Riverfront has raised its tariff from around ₹ 3,000 to ₹ 27,233 for the day of the match.
Owing to the unprecedented demand, rooms are not available for October 15 at five-star hotels such as ITC Narmada, Courtyard by Marriott, Hyatt and Taj Skyline Ahmedabad, according to the PTI report.
The report cites office-bearers of the Hotels and Restaurants Association (HRA) of Gujarat as saying that the tariffs have been hiked by hotels as there is a huge demand, mostly from Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) as well as upper-middle-class cricket fans living in other states.
