With the aim of making air travel easy and comfortable, Chennai airport has mooted an initiative that will enable passengers to check-in their luggage at Metro rail stations. Airline passengers have been showing a preference of using the Metro to reach the airport.
According to the statement issued by the Chennai airport, “Once implemented, the passengers will be issued their boarding pass as soon as they check in their luggage at the counter at the selected Metro station.”
The statement added that a number of airlines have evinced interest in this facility. IndiGo is considering adding a ‘check-in at’ option (airport/metro station) on their online booking website. This prior information will go a long way in providing seamless services for the travellers on the ground.
A meeting to discuss this initiative was held by Dr Sharad Kumar which saw participation by officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited, representatives of airlines including Air India, Vistara and IndiGo.
This facility will ease the passenger rush before flight departure and also reduce the burden of work on airport staff and passengers. It will also help reduce traffic congestion on the roads leading to the airport with more airport-bound passengers likely to opt for Metro train check-ins.
Depending on the feedback of the passengers, this facility will be extended to more Metro stations.
