Chennai cop wins 4 medals at global athletics meet

Besides upholding the law and order, police personnel are capable of bringing glory to the country and their region in other ways. Exemplifying this is Chennai’s woman traffic constable, R. Premila, who won three gold medals and a silver medal in the World Police and Fire Games 2022 held in the Netherlands, making India proud.

Held in Rotterdam, the WPFG saw participation by more than 10,000 players in 63 different events.

Belonging to the 2005 batch, Premila, works as a head constable in the Anna Nagar Traffic Wing.

Winning these medals was not an easy affair for Premila. For the past two years after finishing her gruelling and long work hours, she used to go to the ground to practice. The hard work paid dividends as she beat players from 70 other countries.

Premila won the gold in 100 metre dash, 400 m, long jump and silver in 200 m run.

Sharing her passion for running, she told the New Indian Express: “Running always excites me. Since schooldays, I have been competing in athletics. Despite the heavy workload, senior officers helped me make time for practice and arranged money for travel and entry fees.”

She was encouraged and helped a great deal by senior officers in her endeavour. Her reporting officer Sakthivel who is an Inspector got the finances arranged for her travel. Talking about her he said: “It is rare to see personnel with such zeal to win medals for the country. Premila has proven time and time again with over 50 medals nationally and internationally.”

She required Rs.1.5 lakh in May to pay for her flight tickets and entry fees and one of the retired senior officers arranged the same for her.
