Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, the well-known singer and composer, who died last night, was till the end committed to music and his fans because despite feeling uneasy during his packed Kolkata concert, he performed till the close of the event.

A case of unnatural death has been registered and a post-mortem will be conducted once his family who are already there in Kolkata agree. The mortal remains will be taken to Mumbai for the last rites. KK is survived by his wife and two children.

The popular artist, who was 53, was in the City of Joy for a two-day concert and fell sick while entertaining the audience at Nazrul Mancha event and was rushed to Calcutta Medical Research Institute last night where he was declared brought dead.

A Malayalee born and brought up in Delhi, KK graduated from Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College. Even though he had no formal training he started singing jingles and has more than 3,500 to his name.

Following a break in Kadir’s “Kadhal Desam”, he belted two mega hit songs “Kalluri Saaley” and “Hello Dr.” under the baton of music wizard A.R. Rahman.  His first album “Pal” was super-duper hit and he gave some memorable songs to Bollywood including “Tadap Tadap” in “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”, “Dus Bahane” in “Dus”, “Tune Maari Entriyaan” in “Gunday”, “Gori Gori” in “Main Hoon Na” and many others. He could sing with ease in Tamil, Marathi, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam and Bengali among many other languages.

KK’s death has been condoled by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi who tweeted: “Saddened by the untimely demise of noted singer Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known as KK. His songs reflected a wide range of emotions as struck a chord with people of all age groups. We will always remember him through his songs. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti.”

Others who condoled included Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, Rahul Gandhi, and other celebrities like Akshay Kumar, Virendra Sehwag and others.
