Bollywood star Akshay Kumar, who often came under fire from critics due to his Canadian citizenship, has been granted Indian citizenship on the country’s 77th Independence Day.
“Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind!,” Akshay Kumar said on X (formerly Twitter) while sharing a photo of the registration document.
Akshay Kumar had earlier said that he felt disappointed when people questioned his “love for the country.”
“India is everything to me… Whatever I have earned, whatever I have gained is from here… You feel bad when people say things without knowing anything,” Kumar had lamented in an interview with TV news channel Aaj Tak.
He had applied for an Indian citizenship in 2019 but the processing of his papers got delayed due to the Covid pandemic as he had to get his renounced status from Canada.
Akshay Kumar’s Canadian citizenship issue had come into the public gaze after his interview with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“I never thought that I should get this passport changed but now yes, I have applied to get my passport changed and once I get the renounced status from Canada,.” he had said.
Akshay’s latest movie “OMG” 2, which also stars Yami Gautam and Pankaj Tripathi, is having a good run at the box office as it raked in over Rs 12 crore on Monday. The film had earned over Rs 10 crore on Friday.
