For the convenience of people, especially the working section, the postal authorities in Karnataka have decided to start Sanje Anche Kacheri or evening post office in Bengaluru from January 16.
This will be the first such post office to function in the city in the evening – from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. – at Museum Road and the second one in the State. In mid-November 2022 the first evening post office was started at Dharwad.
Talking to the media, S. Rajendra Kumar, Chief Postmaster General, Karnataka Circle said that it was owing to public demand and the tremendous response the Dharwad PO received that the evening post office was being started. Apart from the General Post Office and the Rail Mail Service post office, no other POs remained open after 3 p.m. causing disappointment among many people keen on sending a parcel or packet.
Kumar also informed that there are plans to open such POs in the near future and he clarified that these will be separate entities and a different brand and it will not be merely extension of working hours of the existing POs.
The evening post office will have the facility of booking Speed Post and Registered Post and also make available picture postcards to people.
At the launch of the Bengaluru evening PO, the Department will also organise a four-kilometre heritage walk which will touch many of the historic buildings of the city. The walk will traverse through Motor Mail Service on Millers Road, Taj West End where the oldest functional post box in Karnataka which dates back to 1856 is located, the old CPMG Office on Palace Road and the GPO on Raj Bhavan Road, before ending at Museum Road.
