Assam State Zoo gets three new rhinos from Kaziranga National Park

The Assam State Zoo, Guwahati, will now have three new rhinos for their visitors to look at and enjoy. These have been translocated from Kaziranga National Park’s Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation Centre (CWRC) to the zoo.

The two females and male were moved from Panbari area of the KNP yesterday for their journey to Guwahati, informed Ramesh Gogoi who is the Divisional Forest Officer of Eastern Assam Wildlife.

The age of these animals varies from two to three years and they were brought to the CWRC in 2019 and 2020 where they were treated for their injuries. Now they have completely recuperated.

Each individual animal was put in separate special wooden boxes and transported in different vehicles.

The Zoo has created a separate enclosure for them where they will be kept in isolation for a month before being allowed to be seen by visitors, said DFO (Zoo), Ashwini Kumar. He added that their health will be regularly monitored.

In the past 20 hand raised rhinos were translocated from KNP to Manas National Park by CWRC team jointly with Assam Forest Department. These rehabilitated rhinos gave birth to eleven calves in Manas National Park.

CWRC Panbari which was started in 2002, is a jointly run wildlife care facility of Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and the State Forest Department and supported by International Fund for Animal Welfare.
