A hen in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur grabbed the headlines as she laid a 210-gram egg –the largest and heaviest ever in India breaking the national record. Usually, eggs weigh between 54 and 100 grams
Belonging to a poultry farm in the Talsande village, this chicken is of Hy-line W-80 breed and experts claim that there may be three to four yolks inside this egg. This big-sized egg was spotted by the poultry farm owner Dilip Chavan.
Having been in the business for four decades, Chavan said he had never seen such a big egg so far. He measured the egg and also weighed it. Initially it was 200 grams but after a day it weighed 210 grams. He confirmed the weight by using three different weight scales.
Talking to the media he said: “I came across this giant egg in my poultry and was very surprised. I have been in the poultry business for the past 40 years, but I had never seen such a big egg before. I first measured the egg with a scale for its size and then I weighed it.”
The record for the largest egg according to the Limca Book of Records is held by a chicken in Punjab which laid an egg weighing 162 grams. It was 10 centimetres long and had a diameter of 5 centimetres. The heaviest egg in the world as per Guinness World Records was laid by a chicken in the United States in 1956 and it had a double yolk and weighed about 454 grams.
