To make a difference in politics there is a need for young people, especially women, to join. Doing that precisely is 21-year-old Anushka Kumari. Hailing from Seohar district of Bihar, she added a new chapter in history by becoming the youngest mukhiya or village head in the Bihar Panchayat elections recently.

While her peers were busy in other activities like college and finding jobs, Kumari made a bold decision to contest the election from her village, Kushahar. What is heartening is that her decision was hailed by local villagers who decided to throw their weight behind her, giving her a convincing victory against her closest rival. As against 2338 votes received by her rival candidate, Rita Devi, Kumari got 2625 votes and was declared elected.

Kumari thanked her village profusely for giving her this chance to serve them. She had returned to her native place after studying in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Having completed her graduation in history, she wants to continue with her education while taking care of the responsibilities that go with being the head of the village.

On being asked as to why she chose to contest, Kumari replied she wanted to bring about a change to her region and dealing with pressing issues like eradication of corruption and making people believe in the system. For achieving this, she believes hard work is required following which success is bound to follow.
