With the aim to protect water bodies in Chennai and turn them into vibrant and happening public spaces, the Tamil Nadu Government intends to give a facelift to 10 lakes.

This project has been mooted by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and it has proposed to spend Rs.100 crore for this purpose. The 10 lakes that have been identified for the makeover are Retteri, Perumbakkam, Madambakkam, Mudichur, Ayanambakkam, Sembakkam, Adambakkam, Velachery, Kolathur and  Puzhal.

The lakes have been chosen based on their geographic spread around the city.

The facelift will allow the strengthening of blue-green infrastructure of the city and help in solving issues including that of urban flooding, climate change and urban heat island.

CMDA intends to rope in the Water Resources Department, the Greater Chennai Corporation and other local bodies for the lake-front development and its maintenance. This is required to prevent discharge of waste water in the lakes and also build infrastructure to take care of this problem.
