In a bizarre incident in Mumbai, a bag containing gold jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh was recovered from rats holed up in a drain in the city, the police said.

Police said the jewellery belonged to Sundari Planibel who works as a domestic help in a colony in Mumbai’s Goregaon area.

While on her way to the bank to deposit her jewellery, 45-year-old Sundari gave a bag containing vada pav to two poor children on the street.

However,  when she reached the bank she suddenly realised that she had absent-mindedly left her jewellery in the bag that she had handed to the kids, said sub inspector Chandrakant Gharge of the Mumbai police.

The police then traced the children and their mother, who told them that they had thrown the bag on a garbage heap as they did not want to eat vada pav.

Police checked the CCTV footage of the area which showed some rats carrying the bag with the gold from the garbage dump to a drain nearby. The bag was then recovered by the police and handed back to Sundari, sub inspector Gharge said.
