India-born Falguni Shah makes the country proud by winning Grammy

Trained in Hindustani classical music, Falguni Shah who won a Grammy Award moved to US in 2000

India once again was in the limelight at the Grammy Awards 2022 with Falguni Shah, an Indian-American singer winning the Award for “A Colorful World” in the Best Children's Album category.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in a Twitter message congratulated the singer on receiving the prestigious award.

Shah whose stage name is Falu expressed her happiness after the win and shared pictures from the Grammy 2022 on the social media. In her Instagram post she wrote: "I have no words to describe today's magic. What an honor to perform for the opening number of the GRAMMY Premier Ceremony, and then take home a statue on behalf of all the incredible people who worked on A Colorful World. We are humbled and thank the Recording Academy for this tremendous recognition. THANK YOU!"

Shah enjoys the distinction of being the only Indian-origin woman to be nominated in the Best Children’s Music Album category at the Grammys twice. Earlier she was nominated in 2018 for her album “Falu’s Bazaar”.

Shah, who is in her early 40s , is trained in the Jaipur musical tradition and the Banaras style of Thumri under Kaumudi Munshi and in semi-classical music by Uday Mazumdar. She moved to US in 2000 and has collaborated with AR Rahman, Yo-Yo Ma, Wyclef Jean, Philip Glass, Ricky Martin and Blues Traveler, among others.
