Bangladesh targets housing for all

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh has a new target: Providing home to all.

According to Dhaka Tribune, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said no one in Bangladesh will remain without shelter as her government is working to ensure access to affordable housing options for all.

"Everyone will get an address," the newspaper quoted her as saying. Meanwhile, through a virtual programme, she handed over newly-constructed flats among 300 families, who had been living in slums of the capital.

"This is the Bangladesh of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Everyone in Bangladesh will get a better life, that’s our aim," she said, according to DT.

Meanwhile, in Bangladesh the month of mourning has started. It is a reminder of the gruesome murder of Mujib—as Bangabandhu is endearingly referred to, along with several members. On the night of August 15, 1975, Rahman and 16 members of his family were brutally killed.

Two of his daughters –Hasina and Sheikh Rehana who were in Germany at that time were saved.

"Our only responsibility is to implement his [Bangabandhu’s] dream, I think that’s the development of Bangladesh," she said at the function.

The South Asian country under Hasina has become one of the major economic powers in the region.

Hasina, who has steered her country into becoming a developing nation—Bangladesh is gearing up to graduate out of the least developed country list, promised to build a “Golden Bangladesh.”
